Supplements of colostrum from cows may counter the drop in immune function following exercise, says a new study from Wales.

Four weeks of supplementation with bovine colostrum reversed the decreases in the function of immune cells that accompanied intense exercise, according to findings published in the British Journal of Nutrition.

The Only Natural Source of IGF-l and TGF Nature's Most Powerful Anti-Aging Substances

Dr_Henderson_004_sBy Donald R. Henderson, MD, MPH

The New England Journal of Medicine reported that the most effective means to stop or slow the aging process would be to replace the hormonal factors that cause the human body to grow normal cellular structures. After maturity (between the ages of 16-20), the level of growth hormone that the body naturally produces dwindles. As a result, the body loses muscle tone and skin elasticity, causing sagging and wrinkling. The body also shrinks and loses bone mass, while the hands, feet, nose and ears get larger.

Lactoferrin - A Polyfunctional Protein

A major component of bovine colostrum

by John Buhmeyer, MS

Although first discovered in 1939, the molecule we now know as lactoferrin was not chemically purified and identified until 1960[1].  The term "lacto" in the name refers to the fact that it was originally identified in cow's milk and colostrum.   Colostrum is particularly rich in lactoferrin where it makes up approximately 6% of the total protein, but lactoferrin is found in many bodily fluids, including tears, saliva, and other exocrine secretions as well as in neutrophil (white blood cell) granules.

The Physiological Functions of Proline Rich Polypeptides (PRP)

Proline Rich Polypeptides are extremely small chains of 10 amino acids or less, notably proline, that nonetheless have a very powerful effect in initiating and balancing our immune responses.

Proline Rich Polypeptides, also known as PRP, enhance the ability of thymus gland to release factors that help regulate immune functions in the body. Specifically, certain T cells, called TH1 helper cells, are antagonist to the activity of TH2 helper cells that promote certain functions of B lymphocytes. PRP can induce a shift from a predominantly humeral immune response to a more protective cellular response described as a "TH2 to TH1 shift".

Liposomal Delivery: the LD Advantage

Why this is so important for colostrum effectiveness

When a baby is born, the mother’s breast does not immediately begin producing milk.  Instead it produces a yellowish fluid called colostrum, or foremilk.  Colostrum is a highly nutritious substance with extraordinary health-giving qualities.  It contains an amazing array of beneficial substances, such as Immunoglobulins (natural antibodies) which offer the infant increased protection from pathogens in its environment, modulators of the immune system to help the infant adapt to challenges, growth factors to complete the development of the gastrointestinal tract, and many other proteins, peptides, and cells that act in concert to protect the infant and prepare it for life in this strange new world it has been thrust into.

Colostrum and Gastrointestinal Health

By John I. Buhmeyer, MS

The newborn gut is unique in that it has not completed maturation at the time of birth and needs the growth factors and other components of colostrum to complete its development.  The incomplete development of the gut is of benefit to the newborn as it allows large proteins, such as immunoglobulins, to easily enter the body.

FASCINATING COLOSTRUM: An Ancient Food for Modem Times

Colostrum was used in ancient times by different cultures for both nourishment and remedial purposes. In an apocryphal work entitled "The Book of Sirach" (written sometime between 300-275 BC), this "first milk" from a female animal who had just given birth, was ranked up there with wheat, honey, salt, water, fire and iron as being some ofthe "necessities oflife." (R.H. Charles' The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of The Old Testament (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1976; I: 459).

Keep Your Immune System Healthy

By John I. Buhmeyer, MS

New drug-resistant bacteria, deadly new diseases like AIDS and bird flu, viruses – the threats to our health seem everywhere. The promise of medicine triumphant against infectious disease seems now like an empty promise. If a cold virus strikes you or your family, what can you do? Over-the-counter medicines only mask the symptoms without getting at the underlying cause. Natural products derived from plants that stimulate the immune system can sometimes have dangerous side effects.

The Colostrum Miracle — Too Good To Be True?

From the editor

It seems that almost every day a new substance or product shows up claiming to heal every complaint under the sun. Since I’ve been writing about natural health, nutrition and alternative medicine for almost twenty years, I’ve seen a lot of these. To be sure, nowadays a lot of powerful natural remedies are being discovered (or rediscovered) but there are also quite a few that fall short of the extravagant claims they make.

Colostrum and Alzheimer’s Disease

By John Buhmeyer, MS

A startling discovery promises hope for Alzheimer's sufferers and their families. In a new clinical trial, a colostrum component is found effective in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD)!

Proline Rich Polypeptides (PRPS) sometimes called Colostrinin, a component of colostrum, is found to improve the mental functioning of Alzheimer's patients. Researchers at the University Medical School in Wroclaw, Poland, conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled study showing that oral administration of colostrinin, a proline-rich polypeptide (PRP) complex isolated from colostrum, improves the outcome of AD patients with mild to moderate dementia' Additionally, colostrinin was found to be a remarkably safe natural supplement.

Colostrum & Allergies

By John Buhmeyer, MS

What are Allergies?

Allergies are considered an auto-immune disorder, since they are caused by an overreaction of the immune system whereby the body produces too many antibodies to neutralize an antigen. In persons with allergies, the immune system mistakenly identifies a normally harmless substance as a threat. Then it releases the chemical called histamine to attack the substance. Histamine produces many of the symptoms associated with allergies.

Colostrum & Athletic Performance

By John Buhmeyer, MS

Colostrum is "a hot supplement in the athletics world," according to Dr. Louise Burke, the Head of Nutrition at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. In fact, many world-class athletes are known to take it regularly. The reason it is receiving so much attention lately is due to the rapidly growing body of clinical evidence that demonstrates how it can support athletic performance.

What can athletes expect from colostrum?
